Diterbitkan Rabu, 29 November 2023

We know that coconut tree has benefits from all its parts, from fruit, stems, leaves, to coconut husk. The fruit coconut has nutritious flesh and water and contains potassium. The outer skin of the fruit, known as the coconut husk, is very useful for plants. Coconut coir is good as a planting medium for plants in the garden. For more details, see the benefits of coconut coir adapted from the Grow Organic page, Sunday (21/11/2021).

The remaining fiber in the outer shell of the coconut is referred to as coconut coir. Coconut coir is useful as a good alternative to growing media in your garden and is definitely more environmentally friendly. The benefits of coconut coir for plants in the garden are:

  1. Coconut coir is biodegradable and slower than peat moss and other organic materials.
  2. Coconut coir is a weed-free and odor-free product.
  3. As an organic soil amendment
  4. Helps improve soil structure
  5. Provides excellent soil and air plant roots
  6. Increases water holding capacity. Acts as a sponge to hold water in the root zone, thus becoming a water reservoir for the plant. Coconut coir has a better water holding capacity than others.
  7. At the same time retaining water, the coconut husk will also remove excess water so that the plants are not flooded
  8. Although it does not have significant nutritional value, this benefit of coconut coir retains nutrients so that they are still available to plants.

How to Use Coconut Coir

Coconut coir fiber used as a soil amendment for this plant is usually in the form of solid blocks. You have to first soak this solid block coconut coir in water, then break it up for use.

Make sure and expand the coconut coir blocks in a large container. Add water in a bowl and let the coconut coir absorb and expand. This soaking step may take about 15 minutes or so. After that, you can use a shovel or digging fork to break up the remaining large chunks. Lastly, stir until fluffy. Coconut coir is ready to use.

Those are some of the benefits of good coconut coir as a planting medium for your plants in the garden. Hope it’s useful!
